20 days. 1 driftboat. 320 miles.

THANKS.

In 2009, Clark Fork Coalition board member Daniel Kiely and fishing guide John Havlik floated the length of the Clark Fork River, starting at Racetrack Creek near Butte, and taking out 320 miles downriver at Lake Pend Oreille, Idaho.  The Clark Fork 320 was an incredible celebration of a river on the rebound.  Download an account of the journey on the 320 blog.

Thank you to the many friends and communities along the way and behind the scenes who helped make it happen:

In 2009, two men floated the length of the Clark Fork from its headwaters near Butte, Montana, to its terminus at Lake Pend Oreille in Idaho.  The Clark Fork 320 showcased not only the many ways the river is bouncing back, but also launched the Clark Fork Coalition's new stream restoration program, the Vital Rivers Initiative.

The Vital Rivers Initiative will build networks and technical capacity among our partners, with the goal of repairing degraded tributaries in the upper Clark Fork from Racetrack to Rock Creek.  This Vital Headwaters Initiative will be carefully coordinated to augment the government’s Superfund cleanup project focused on the main stem of the river, and geared toward creating long-term resilience in feeder creeks and streams to the impacts of climate change and urbanization.

We believe a network-based approach will add much-needed ecological value to cleanup, boost the region’s rural restoration economy, broaden landowner participation in the Superfund project, and create a model for community-driven, watershed-wide revitalization.
