CFSF Lunchtime Science Seminar: History of Nutrient Standards & Management for the Clark Fork River

Please join us Wednesday, June 18th from 12-1pm MDT via Zoom for the next installment of our Clark Fork Science Forum monthly webinar and discussion series. Our next speaker will be Hannah Adkins. She will present on the history of nutrient standards and management for the Clark Fork River, and will discuss her work understanding the relationships among nutrient concentrations, hydrologic disturbances, and algal biomass. A full description of this topic is below as well as a Zoom link for joining the presentation. Grab your lunch and join us!

Seminar Description

The Clark Fork River has long struggled with nutrient pollution, with excess nutrients supporting dense blooms of algae during the summer growing period. Early recognition of these issues led to the establishment of Montana’s first numeric nutrient and algae standards and the state’s first large-river total maximum daily load (TMDL) in 1998. Since the inception of the TMDL, in-stream nutrient concentrations have declined. However, excessive algal growth persists in the upper river. In this study, I use simple and multiple regressions to examine the relationships among nutrient concentrations, scouring flows, and algal biomass. Results indicate that scouring flows act as an additional environmental factor influencing the spatial and temporal dynamics of algal growth in the Clark Fork River. I then use these results to provide recommendations for future nutrient management and inform updates to the aging TMDL framework.
